Do you know what the Festival of Lights is?  How about the Festival of Oil?  On December 16th, Mrs. Carter’s, Mrs. Terry’s, and Mr. LeMmon’s world Geography classes learned that it’s not just the name Spanish Fork’s premier Christmas light display.  Lori Cable, mother of 9th grader Spencer Cable, spoke to all the geography classes explaining the origins of Hanukah and describing how the holiday is celebrated today.

The Festival of Lights is one of the titles of the Jewish celebration Hanukah.  And because it commemorates the miraculous continual burning of the Jews scant supply of oil lasting eight days, it’s also called the Festival of Oil.  In modern times, the miracle is celebrated over an eight day period.  Candles in a Menorah are lit every night, blessings are said, families share foods like latkes (fried potato pancakes) and beef brisket, and play games.  SFJH ninth grader got to play one game featuring a spinning top called a dreidel.   Chocolate coins wrapped in gold paper are often given as prizes.

SFJH appreciates Mrs. Cable’s willingness to share her culture with us.  Hanukah starts tonight.  Light a candle and celebrate a miracle!
