Spanish Fork Junior High’s annual Poetry Slam was held Thursday, April 20th in the Little Theater.  Slammers from across three grade levels performed to a packed house who snapped enthusiastically.  It was awesome!

Thirty-nine students participated.  To qualify, students needed to find and memorized poems of at least 12 lines.  While many students researched poets to find their poems, a significant number of students wrote poems especially for the slam.

Judges from the community evaluated participants’ performances.  SFJH wishes to thank Linda Bethers, Bartley Nicholes, and Justin Swapp for their time and enthusiasm.  And they had their work cut out for them!  This reporter is glad she was not in their shoes.

Ten students placed this year.

For original compositions, Grace Fillmore took first place, Kacie Rosales took second, and Kaitlyn Swan took third.

In the humorous category, Mallorie Bingham took top honors with Carter Flory coming in second.  There was a tie for third place—Maria Avila and Hailey Wilson shared this honor.

The top honor for a dramatic interpretation went to Camden McDonald.  Alyx Scheetz came in second and Bronte Matis took home third place.

All ten winners are now qualified to participate in the Nebo District Slam held May 11, 2017.  Congratulations to winners and two thumbs way up for all the Slammers from SFJH.
