In Ms. Dannelly’s honors English class, the students are making blackout poetry using old books, newspapers, and magazines. Blackout poetry is where a poet takes a marker and goes over a page of a book or magazine blacking out words to create a new poem. Poets can even draw pictures on the paper relating to the poem and still show what the poem is saying.

Students can create an entirely different poem out of a normal story. Two students can find different things in the same page, so you never know what you might end up with. That’s because different words can stick out to different people. Some students have created masterpieces out of this fun activity while others have made hilarious poems during the time while constructing blackout poems.

The students had a blast doing blackout poetry in Ms. Dannelly’s 3rd and 4th period classes. Using books and magazines great poems were produced. So what are you waiting for? Grab a page out of a old book and a marker and start doing some blackout poetry.
