We all agree that drugs, alcohol, and tobacco harm the brain and are addictive.  Today, students at SFJH learned we should add one more substance to this list—pornography!

Fight the New Drug is an organization whose mission, according to its website, is “to provide individuals the opportunity to make an informed decision regarding pornography by raising awareness on its harmful effects using science, facts, and personal accounts.”

Representative from Fight the New Drug visited SFJH today and presented an assembly to students.  Fights co-founder and executive director Clay Olsen, along with Kyle Roberts engaged students as they taught them pornography isn’t just a harmless form of entertainment.  Instead, students learned pornography is addictive and harms the brain.  It changes the way we see our loved ones, turning them into objects, and harming our relationships.  Finally, pornography’s destructive effects on individuals are harming society, leading to more violence and warped ideas about intimacy.

After the assembly, students were invited to sign an anti-pornography pledge.  Many students came forward, eager to add their name to the growing list of teens who are standing up for themselves and each other.

More information on pornography and what individuals and groups can do to stop it can be found by going to http://www.fightthenewdrug.org/#get-the-facts .
