If you’re walking through the cafeteria one morning before school, you might just want to grab a bite of breakfast, settle in, and listen to the Jazz Band. Jeffrey Sass, who plays the alto saxophone says, “Jazz Band is a great before school activity where you play harder music than normal and you have to work harder and devote more time than Concert Band.” Lindsey Deveraux who plays the tenor saxophone says that being in the Jazz Band “has helped me learn more about music.”
Mr. Carter also teaches the Percussion Ensemble. Billy Thaler says, “I joined percussion class because I had always wanted to play drums. It's great. Mr. Carter is the best—super nice; I love learning from him. I also like to learn the xylophone which is what we are learning right now. I recommend piano experience; it makes it a lot easier.”
Jocelyn Hansbrow joined the ensemble because she thought it would be fun. “I've played piano since I was five and enjoyed it, and decided I should try something new. Mr. Carter is nice and funny, and of course I am fond of music.”
Enoch Sanchez, who plays the trombone in the Jazz Band, wrote, "As the trumpet and trombone song blares through the room, as the saxophone plays the smooth notes of our own symphony, and while the cello's soft strum of the strings slowly fill the room with calming harmony, the entire world slows down, as if the only thing in the world is the rhythm and song of Jazz."
