The month of March has been very busy for the Spanish Fork Lobo Concert and Jazz Bands. Concert Band had a festival on March 10th at the Spanish Fork High School and the Jazz Band on March 26th at Maple Mountain. Jazz and Concert Bands both received a Superior (1-) rating.
At festival, the Lobo Concert Band played “Chorale Elegant,” and “Jungle Dance.”
The adjudicator was Paul Watson. He gave the Band a clinic on the stage right after performing where he taught that “Quitting is forever.” Once you quit it’s hard to come back. He advised the students to stay in band and not to quit, because the band is making great music.
The Jazz Band raised the roof in “Big Sky” with soloist Nash Johnston on trombone. Their next musical selection was “Chase the Clouds Away” which featured the saxophone section. They finished strong with “Chameleon” with soloists Spencer Deveraux on bari sax, Kaden Bringhurst on trombone, Mark Heward on trumpet, and Lucas DelGreco on trombone. The judge was Lars Yorgason. He told the Band that they were exceptionally good. He also mentioned that the band was tying together really well.
The Jazz Band went recruiting on March 13th to all the elementary schools that go to our school. They played “Raiders’ March,” “Under the Sea,” “Friend Like Me,” “Chameleon,” and “Danza Para Mihja” or “Dance For My Daughter.” The kids were dancing to the music with the Band. They had lots of fun!
Later that night, each Band performed for their families and friends at the Junior High Little Theater. The 7th grade Band combined with the concert Band and played “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond. Good music was shared by all.
On March 28th, Diamond Fork Junior High combined with Spanish Fork Junior high and had a “Band Petting Zoo.” The incoming 7th graders could try out the different band instruments. Then they selected their instruments for next year with Mr. Wendell, the Band director. Older and more advanced students go to help the new kids try out instruments that they would like to learn to play. They encouraged the 6th graders to do summer band in June.
The Lobo Bands are doing great and are continuing to do well. They have made some great friendships and created fun memories together this year. The Lobo bands want to express their gratitude to Mr. Wendell, professionals who taught group lessons, and of course their supportive parents. You can support us by coming to our concerts. Our next Concert is May 15th at 7:00 pm, in the little theater at Spanish Fork Junior High.
This summer, there are a lot of opportunities to get involved. Have you considered joining the Spanish Fork High School Marching Band or sharpening your music skills by attending Summer Band? We also have a new leadership program called Tri-M that you can join. Tri-M is a music honor society where you become and learn about being a leader. We do service projects and lots of other fun games and activities. We would love to have you be a part of all these extracurricular programs full of fun and learning. Make a difference by being part of Tri-M. We are the leaders of tomorrow, so take part of these great opportunities to get involved.
We couldn't do it without our supportive parents. Parents make a HUGE difference. Parents are the ones who make you practice. They do it because they love you, not because they want to torture you as much as possible. When you play you have a 73% less chance of discipline problems. Music is a science, mathematics, foreign language, history, PE, develops insight, and it is an art. We can take music and paint a picture with it. Music can do that, and so much more. Thank you parents!
Band has shaped who we are in very positive ways. We joined band because we have fun, we make life-long friends, make music, build leadership skills, be able to solve problems, and most importantly build character. Band takes a lot of determination. Our Band students have showed that they have that determination, by practicing at home and constantly getting better and lifting others up. We love music and hope to be able to share our joy that we have found with music and share it with you. Band can help you with school. Music helps you get higher test scores and better scores on the SAT. Never quit trying! It is worth it! Music has a place for everyone and we would love you to be a part of their team! Join Band!
