Parker Wood, an eighth-grade student at Spanish Fork Jr. High, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship.  The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the annual National Geographic Bee.  In order to participate in the Bee, eighth graders had to pass a written test with a high qualifying score.  There were only 30 seats available for the entire eighth grade so being able to participate is an accomplishment in and of itself.  The following students qualified and participated in the school competition:

  • Parker Wood
  • Brock Schiller
  • Boyce Rawlins
  • Thomas Laidlaw
  • Alyssa Pollock
  • Bryson Shipman
  • Tannis Ott
  • Jordan Bakker
  • Kiah Skollingsberg
  • Dylan Oyler
  • Emily Gwilliam
  • Owen Nebeker
  • Corban Starkey
  • Jacob Insalaco
  • Isaac Mitchell
  • Jack Hargreaves
  • Abbey Knight
  • Soren Turner
  • Thomas Cox
  • Gerrit Thompson
  • Alyssa Wessman
  • Will Cheshire
  • Courtney Albertson
  • Isaac Bryan
  • Cayten Chinen
  • Nick Jepperson
  • Jason Martin
  • Madison Parry
  • Lauryn Tingey

Parker Wood finished the competition in First Place with Soren Turner finishing in Second Place and Bryson Shipman finishing in Third Place.  Congratulations to our school finalists!

School winners around the country, including Parker, will now take a written test to be eligible to compete in the state Geographic Bee this spring.  State winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the National Geographic Bee and a chance for a $50,000 scholarship.

We would like to thank the families and friends who showed their support for this event.  Also, we would like to give a special thanks to Dave Huff for administering the questions.
