Seventh graders recently had an opportunity to attend a field trip to “This is the Place State Heritage Park.” While they were there, students explored Navajo culture with a tour of a Navajo Hogan. Students experienced first-hand Pioneer hardships by learning about and pulling Pioneer handcarts. Students then witnessed a working blacksmith demonstration. Finally, students didn’t get entirely away from school, but participated in a Pioneer school lesson learning about the Deseret Alphabet and various schooling procedures which were very different from today. The field trip gave students a broader appreciation of their citizenship in Utah and helped them learn valuable insights regarding Utah heritage and history.
