Pastor France Davis of the Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City spoke with SHFJ students on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 during a Red Ribbon Week Assembly.  In his message, Pastor Davis encouraged students to do four things:

  1.  Spend time learning about yourself.  We need to know who we are.
  2. Spend time learning about others.  The more we know about other’s traditions and cultures the more we’ll discover we have in common.
  3. Learn others songs.  Music plays a big part in the lives of teens, and the songs we like reveal a lot about us.  Take time to expand our musical horizons.
  4. Be your best.  “If you ain’t what you is, you is what you ain’t,” one of Pastor Davis’ favorite sayings, reminds us to pay attention to what we are becoming.

Davis’ message was one of hope, encouragement, as well as a call to act.  He encouraged students to become educated then use their education to better the world.  He cautioned students to shun bullying in all its forms and to stand for equality and respect.
