Spanish Fork Junior High honored area veterans on November 11th, 2014 with our annual Veteran’s Assembly.

As is tradition, SFJH students invited friend and family members who were veterans to attend with them.  The school was decorated with hundreds of red, white, and blue stars naming the family members of students and faculty who have served in the armed forces.

Art students in Mr. Dave Millman’s class did their part to honor our guests by creating pictures and writing tributes.

We were honored to hear from former Spanish Fork mayor, Wayne Anderson.  Mr. Anderson spoke about taking his father, Gerald Anderson, on the Honor Flight to see the World War Two memorial in Washington, DC.  He also counseled students to honor the memory of those who sacrificed for our nation by taking an active part in government and learning all they can about those who made our country what it is today.

He focused the spot light on two WWII vets in attendance, Gerald Anderson and Grant Moore.  Gerald Anderson was in a group slated to invade Japan until the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  He was in the first group of GIs to visit the bomb sites and help the survivors after Japan’s surrender.  Grant Moore worked maintaining bombers and their weapons systems during the conflict.  Through his diligent efforts, air crews were able to fly safely on their missions.

Students were also treated to a video presentation that features highlights from the Honor Flight this summer.  Many were touched by the heartfelt thanks offered by those veterans who visited the WWII Memorial.

A big thank you to Kathleen Provstgaard for singing the National Anthem and SFJH students Emily Rowley and Mark Heward for playing Taps at the end.
