Winning Isn’t the Most Important Thing

Let’s be honest—winning is fun.  But on October 14th, the Lady Lobo Cross Country team showed they know there is something more important than winning.

According to Coaches Nate Bartholomew and Esther Zacharias, at the Varsity race’s half way point, runner Ziya Lockheart fell.  Hurt, unable to continue, and at this point unseen by race officials, Ziya was eventually helped by teammates Addison Romney and Kenidee Disbrow as they ran by with a later group of runners.  Because they stopped running to assist their teammate, they finished the race but considerably behind their original pace.

Some might question this behavior.  After all, races are important.  Runners have goals; the team counts on everyone to finish.  Many runners are taught they shouldn’t stop—they must keep running.

What these Lady Lobos know, however, is that backing the Pack is even more important.  While their actions cost the team points, their example can teach all of us the importance of self-sacrifice, compassion, and sportsmanship—things much more important than winning.

Thank you Ziya for running a great race—you have heart!

Thank you Addison and Kennidee for your stellar example.  You know how to Back the Pack!
