Write Outside Yourself: Haunts and Horrors

The UVU University & Community Writing Centers are accepting submissions for Vol. IV of Write Outside Yourself. Student writers in Utah junior high/middle or high schools may submit original works of writing for a chance to be guided through the publishing process, published in a print and online journal, and recognized at a celebration in June 2017.

Authors whose stories are accepted will receive a copy of the journal and are eligible to receive additional honors celebrating the merit of their newly-published works.

This year, the UVU Writing Center is calling for “Haunts and Horrors.” Fictional stories and poetry, from horror to science fiction are all welcome.

Whether it be ghosts, demons, creatures, aliens, or rogue AI, horror and sci-fi lets us explore the darker side of ourselves, deal with the worst outcomes of "what if," and serve as an attempt to make sense of the unknown. Culturally, these stories can also serve as cautionary tales.

Popular literature includes pieces that address the following questions:

  • What happens when science goes too far?
  • What happens when you try to trick the Devil?
  • What happens when you ignore your mother's warning not to go out tonight?

Story themes might include but are not limited to

  • Retelling of classic Horror Stories or Urban Legends
  • Continuations or new spins on classic monster stories like Dracula, Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde
  • Cautionary Tales
  • Anything that goes “bump” in the night!

Submission Guidelines

  • Authors must be middle/junior high or high school students and live in Utah
  • Submissions must be original, fan fiction is not allowed (no Harry Potter or Edward Cullen spin-offs)
  • Content must be appropriate for a young adult audience
  • Submissions cannot exceed 15 typed, double-spaced pages
  • Entries must fit within the contest theme
  • Work must be submitted online by the due date

EXTENDED DEADLINE: Entries are due at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31st, 2017.

Submissions will be judged in a double-blind reading by a panel of writing center staff, and notice of publication will be emailed on Monday, February 6th, 2017
