Eighth Graders on Capitol Hill

Submitted by david.thacker on

SFJH eighth grade US History classes were able to take a trip to the state capitol last week and learn about our state government.

They watched a legislative session where laws were passed.  They watched lobbyists outside of the House advocate for the measures they wanted to see passed.  Finally, students toured the capital building meeting up and chatting with Representative Mike McKell and Senator Deidre Henderson.

The ninth grade honors math students had an opportunity to take the math that they were learning and see it put into real life practice when they went to the BYU Technology and Engineering Expo.  The students were given hands on experience learning about the effects of radiation, calculating the speed of light using chocolate in a microwave, and experimenting with creating their own refrigeration system.    These were some of the many activities that were in a hands on lab with the assistance of the students in the Chemical Engineering program at Brigham Young University

After reading Getting Away with Murder: The True Story of the Emmett Till Case, eighth grade students in Mrs. Thompson’s English class spent two weeks researching another civil rights topic of choice.

Last week, in honor of Black History Month, students created slideshows showcasing their findings and featured them in a civil rights museum. Author Chris Crowe visited the school on Friday and got to see firsthand where the reading of his book had taken students.

Orchestra Goes Recruiting

Submitted by david.thacker on

On February 20, the Spanish Fork Junior High beginning orchestra class traveled to four elementary schools throughout the day. This is an annual trip the beginning orchestra class takes to tell the sixth graders to join orchestra, especially since registration is going on now. Some of the music played were from movies such as Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean. A few of the students decided to play solos and did pieces from popular video games, movies, and even The Office! They played amazing, and Mrs. Harman, the SFJH orchestra teacher thinks so.
