Eighth grader Kate Baadsgaard was the grade level winner in this year's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest sponsored by the Utah State Office of Education. Kate and two of her family members attended a luncheon Wednesday, January 15, in the Hilda B. Jones Center in Salt Lake City where students were recognized for their award-winning entries. Principal Fleming and Mrs.Thompson were also in attendance. During the ceremony, students were commended for their efforts in tackling this year's theme which centered on bullying and the famous quote by Dr. King: "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." Keynote speaker, Reverend France A. Davis, shared his thoughts and experiences as a civil rights activist in the 1960s and encouraged everyone in attendance to continue the quest for equality and fair treatment in America. Kate did an excellent job addressing the theme, entitling her paper "Heroes Vs. Bullies" and in the end, produced the winning eighth grade essay which earned her a seventy-five dollar cash prize and recognition from the USOE .Good job, Kate.
