SFJHS Students Sew to Serve

Submitted by david.thacker on
Seventh graders in Mrs. Thacker's 1st semester FACS Exploration class used their newly learned sewing skills to sew teddy bears for Dolls of Hope.

The teddy bears may look like an easy sewing project, but they are not as simple as they seem.  Students learned and applied the following sewing skills and techniques to complete their bears:

  • Fabric marking techniques
  • Hand embroidering a split stitch
  • Hand-stitching a whip stitch or blanket stitch to applique
  • Sewing curves
  • Pivoting to sew different angles
  • Clipping and notching angles and curved seams
  • Hand-stitching a ladder stitch
Dolls of Hope is an organization that sends handmade dolls and teddy bears to thousands of refugee children and children in crisis in the US or around the world.  Check out https://www.dollsofhope.org/ to find out more.
