As a break from testing, Mrs. Anderson's 9th grade classes enjoyed a little down time in the sunshine learning, watching, and participating in performing arts.
Amelia Nicholson, BYU'S Snare Drum Line section leader, shared some of her routines, and then gave a small tutorial to a few brave students ready to learn beginning skills. Amelia began her drumming career in North Carolina and gives a Southern flare to her performances. Knowing in the crowd was Alyssa, an aspiring drummer, the two got to jam and talk the lingo.
Kelina Anderson, a member of BYU's Living Legends Native Section and a former student of Spanish Fork Junior High, followed the drums with a Hoop Dance. She can create formations using up to 23 hoops, but showed fast transitions with seven today. After, Kelina led a couple of groups of students through work with one hoop.
Sometimes a hoop or a drum stick drops while performing risky moves. What do you do? You pick them up and keep going; an "Invictus" lesson that applies to some of their English lessons.
