Ms. Christensen’s ninth grade English classes played a game this week called Name That Sonnet! Using Erik Didriksen’s book, Pop Sonnets: Shakespearean Spins on Your Favorite Songs, students did their best to identify modern-day lyrics rewritten in coded iambic pentameter.
With the fever of a frenzied game show contestant playing for thousands of dollars, each of Ms. Christensen’s students concentrated as she read the displayed writing on the screen then called out, jumped, or cheered when they could identify the correct title.
What a creative way for students to practice discovering the not-so-hidden messages in Shakespearean language as they prepare to read Romeo and Juliet. This lesson highlights yet another way teachers at Spanish Fork Junior High make learning fun and accessible while keeping academic expectations high.
Way to go, Ms. C!
