Last May, Miss Holley held auditions for the Shakespeare Team. We had some rehearsals in the summer and then started up rehearsals in earnest when school started. All of our hard work paid off. On October 8th, the Spanish Fork Junior High Shakespeare Team traveled down to SUU for Shakespeare competitions. It was a very tough, but very fun three days. We had the chance to go to theatre and dance workshops. We watched other people compete and we competed ourselves against other junior highs and middle schools. All our hard work was rewarded. Our dance ensemble, “Conspiracy Nightmare” inspired by Julius Caesar and choreographed by Wendy Warr, won second place in our division. The acting ensemble, “Twelfth ‘Late’ Night” directed by Meg Grierson, also won second place. The acting trio, Richard III with Marty Sperry, Blake Alanis, and Kalie Hiatt, won third place. Michelle Jones, Jenna Grass, and Aubree Head won second place for their dance, “Naughty or Nice?” inspired by Kate from Taming of the Shrew. Alexa Baker received 4th place for her portrayal as Queen Catherine in King Henry VIII. Overall, the entire team received high enough points to win second place sweepstakes in the Stratford division. We had amazing experiences down there and we grew closer as a team. We would like to thank Miss Holley for being an amazing and dedicated director. She put up with every stupid thing we did and made our experience something we will never forget.

Beverley, Executive Director and Fiona Snaith, a Zoologist presented an exciting educational assembly about animal careers and different animal related occupations. Marine biologist, veterinarian, Ferrier, wild life photographer, aquarist, curator, and avian biologist were just a few of the occupations mentioned. Through their PowerPoint presentation, students were enlightened of the importance of education early in their schooling. The highlights of the assembly were the live animals from around the world. Karen strongly advised the students to start thinking now about what occupation they would like to have. Understanding that subjects such as math, science, and English were all relevant in any occupation they chose, students need to be diligent in their education.

Spanish Fork Jr. High Tennis

The Tennis team at Spanish Fork Jr. High School just completed a successful rebuilding season.  The team consisted of twenty hard-working girls.  Only four of those twenty girls had any previous experience in playing tennis!  Coach Sandi Coxson said, “Because it was a building year for us, we only won two of our five team matches but with each one, the girls improved their skills so much.”  Each of the girls won at least one of their sets throughout the season.  This was a great victory considering the girls’ lack of experience and Coach Coxson is very proud of them.
Many of the girls were victorious in the final tournament of the season.  McKenzie Hancock placed 3rd and Ali Duncan placed 5th in the JV Singles category.  Nicole Hermanson and Madi Miller placed 5th in the Varsity Singles category.  The team of Alex Overson and Kirtlyn Bohling placed 5th, Pagie Mitchell and Anna Castleberry, as well as Ashley Black and Madi Murphy, placed 6th and Holly Roberts and Breanna Garlic placed 7th in the Doubles category.
Spanish Fork Jr. High congratulates the girls and their coaches on such a great “building” year.

Aspiring new author Lisa Mangum visited Spanish Fork Junior High School and the Salem Library on Friday Oct. 9th. She is an editor for Deseret Book and has always had a love for reading and writing. The Hourglass Door is her first published book.

The Hourglass Door is an intense exciting concept of time travel. The main character, Abby, is tired of the same old routines and wants something exciting to happen in her life. She gets what she was hoping for when she meets a mysterious exchange student from Italy named Dante, who has a few secrets of his own.

Mangum taught the class about the writing process in general as well as her personal process of writing. She explained how she creates characters, how to connect characters to each other through different relationships, and how to structure a plot when writing for ourselves.  It was a thoughtful, well organized presentation that everyone enjoyed it.
